Seperation Anxiety

How is your dog in the morning when you are preparing for work?

Is he settled and happily following you around the house doing his normal routine, does he turn into psycho dog when you leave, or is she anxiously following and looking and crying, obviously agitated while you are getting ready for work.  My little girl follows me around and does her training tricks like standing between my feet and keeping up with me where ever I am going, if she thinks I am heading for the gate she races out doing circle work in the hope she gets to come with me. My routine sets her up for excitement, so I try to change it up, do different things to start my day, do a bit of training or do something that makes her think about things other than the fact that i might be leaving soon. If it happens to be a day where I can’t bring her to work I tell her  “Crate” and she runs to her crate and I close the door. Dad lets her out sometime after I leave. This morning though I noticed a subtle difference, when I left it was early and I wasn’t going to be gone long, I got home though to a pile of toys and destroyed tissues sitting on the veranda where she usually waits for me. Is this a problem in the making or just because she is a puppy and she likes chewing things. Hmm

To determine true separation anxiety over just bored/restless/stressed/dog at home alone syndrome, we need to determine the dogs mood as we ready ourselves to leave in the morning, How is the dog when we get home in the afternoon, a dog with genuine separation anxiety will display different set of symptoms to a dog who is just bored, or who knows he’s in for trouble when you get home because he knows that you are going to yell at him for what ever poor behaviour choices he made throughout the day.

If your dog genuinely has separation anxiety we have work to do and the sooner we get started the better, we don’t want any one not even our dogs to have to live with the crippling disease that is anxiety, there is good news there is help out there, If you dog is just a normal naughty/untrained dog who is naughty in the vacuum that is there when you are not around, we need to do some work on that as well otherwise the destruction will get worse and then we will have another whole set of problems to deal with.

Tips for Separation anxiety:

Start hand feeding your dog during relaxed quiet times when you are at home with your dog.

Teach them to enjoy a chew toy and to chew on it while you are close by.

Gradually move the chew toy away from your spot  and encourage the dog with positive voice while she is enjoying her chew toy

start crating your dog and her chew toy while you are home, door open door closed lots of voice rewards, gradually move the crate further away from you until it is in another room.

Start leaving your dog with his chew toy in his crate while you walk around the block or do other stuff starting small and building to longer periods of time.

Remember anxiety is not something you can cure overnight or without work it takes time and effort and to resolve, just like human anxiety, we are changing the way the dog thinks but we are also changing our behaviour to cure the dogs anxiety.
